Passover Cup   Happy Passover!
Passover (Pesach) 2009 begins at sundown on April 8th and lasts through April 16. Chametz (leavened food) is removed from the home before beginning any food preparation for the holiday. The first two days (only the first day in Israel) are celebrated by observant and reform Jews worldwide with a Seder, or holiday meal. The final two days (only the last day in Israel) are observed with special prayers. The word Seder means “order,” and follows the steps laid out in the Haggadah. Symbolic foods such as matzah, or unleavened bread are laid out on the table and eaten to commemorate the haste with which the Jews had to leave Egypt. The Seder Plate is the central focus of the Passover table. The sedar plate contains charoset, a mixture of chopped fruits, nuts and sweet wine; karpas, a green vegetable or herb for spring often dipped in salt water to symbolize tears; beitzah, a roasted hard-boiled egg, representing the cycle of life and the Temple sacrifice; zeroa, a roasted meat bone commemorating the ancient Passover sacrifice; mar'or, a bitter herb (like horseradish) representing the bitterness of slavery and chazeret, a bitter herb such as lettuce, occasionally fills the sixth place on the Seder plate. In addition, four cups of wine or grape juice are consumed at set points in the Seder to represent G-d’s promises.
