The Mizel Museum was founded in 1982 by philanthropists Carol and Larry A. Mizel and Rabbi Stanley Wagner. Originally housed at a local synagogue, the museum focused on the broad diversity of Jewish life through art, artifacts, architecture, archaeology, ritual and customs. In 1986, Rabbi Wagner introduced It Shall be a Crown Upon Your Head: Headwear Symbolism in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the first interfaith exhibition of its kind in the world. This also was the first of many Mizel Museum programs that explore and celebrate multiculturalism.
In 2004, the museum was relocated to its current location on Kearney Street in Denver. Since its inception, the Mizel Museum has developed a wide range of educational programs, cultural exhibits and thought-provoking events that are rooted in Jewish values and address today’s most relevant social justice issues.
